Welcome everyone to the first of a new series of posts titled “iCareers”. The iCareers posts will be focused on careers in the information field – including information technology, information management, library science, and school media. It will be a format to discuss career development, career advice, and career trends. It will also be a place to announce upcoming career events and activities at the iSchool and across SU as a whole.
My desire is that this becomes an interactive blog with input from not just me, but from students, prospective students, alums, faculty, employers, and other career services professionals. I will be looking for guest bloggers to share their experience and advice in order to provide as broad a perspective as possible.
In case you are wondering who I am, I am the new Employer Relations Director for the iSchool. Together with Kathy Benjamin, we make the Employer Relations Office. The next logical question is, “What is Employer Relations Anyway?” That is a very good question, and one with an answer that is continuing to evolve daily.
I view our primary responsibility as expanding our existing relationships with employers and identifying new employers to partner with on various activities including:
- Internships for students
- Post graduation placement of students
- Curriculum advisement
- Guest lecturing
- Collaborations and research
With the fall semester now upon us, we are beginning the employer recruiting season. This means that a big focus for us is scheduling employer visits to the school to do classroom visits, host tables in the lobby, conduct information sessions, etc. all with the goal of providing a chance for students to interact with these employers and to discuss possible internships and post graduation placement opportunities.
To help students prepare for these visits and the recruiting season, we are also coordinating some career development events and providing new tools and resources… but that’s for another blog (or two!).
I am extremely excited about all that we have planned, and I think the iCareers blog series will be a great way to share all that’s going on. So please keep reading on!
