Every so often, an app comes along that I know I can’t download till the weekend because otherwise I won’t get any work done the entire week. This week that app happened to coincide with the #1 free app on iTunes, and it is called QuizUp.
QuizUp claims to be the biggest trivia game in the world. What makes this app unique is that is combines this trivia with a social network. This app allows you to challenge your friends (or strangers around the world) to a real-time trivia game. The app has a library of 300 topics that includes over 150,000 questions. The topics range from music to food, sports, tv and much more.
The Social Network
When you first log-in you have the option to do so through Facebook. If you choose this option, you most likely will have hundreds of your Facebook friends waiting in your QuizUp friends list. You can also connect up with Twitter, Game Center and your address book at this time. The reasons for adding this social element to QuizUp scores are standard. It allows you to share your successes on your personal social accounts, play against your real-life friends, and gives the company the opportunity to collect big data by creating user profiles with game data and history.
How it Works
After signing up, you can then begin initiating trivia matches. The app gives you the choice to either challenge someone you know or let the app pick an equally ranked opponent.
When you challenge a friend you must balance between racing to get the answer first, and picking the correct answer. You have ten seconds to answer each question and get more points for answering quicker.
As you gain points in each category, you will soon accumulate enough points to level up. The motivation for this is that once you reach level 10 on any topic you will receive a tagline for your profile that is relevant to that category.
QuizUp also introduces a social aspect into the game, as it allows you to chat with your opponent during the game. You can either talk smack or show off your sportsmanship. If you think you are the ultimate master of a certain topic, you can also try to reach the top of the leaderboard!
Why You’re Hooked
- You love to brag when you win against your friends and random strangers. You got all the questions right and it took you no time at all to answer the questions? You’re so smart aren’t you.
- These are relevant topics that people are passionate about. Don’t try to get in the way of a girl and her One Direction knowledge.
- It presents incentive. You really want to have the coolest profile tagline out of all your friends
- Because there are actually some educational topics, the app embodies the phrase, “You learn something new everyday.”
